About Cotherstone
- Cotherstone cheese is one of the few surviving traditional farmhouse cheeses of the North of England — a soft, crumbly white cheese with a mild, slightly acidic flavour that has been made in the Teesdale area for centuries. The cheese is made by a handful of local farms and is sold at farmers' markets and specialist cheese shops across the North East. Cotherstone Castle, of which only earthworks and a fragment of masonry survive, was built by the Fitzhugh family in the twelfth century and was one of the strongholds of the Neville family during the Wars of the Roses.
