About Duddingston
- Duddingston Kirk, which dates from the twelfth century, is one of the oldest churches in continuous use in Scotland. The churchyard contains a watch-house built in the early nineteenth century to deter body-snatchers, who were active in Edinburgh during the period when the city's medical schools created a demand for cadavers. The church also has a jougs — an iron collar used to punish wrongdoers — attached to its gate.
- The Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston claims to be the oldest pub in Scotland, with records of a hostelry on the site dating back to 1360. The inn is said to have been a favourite of Mary Queen of Scots and James VI, and its skittle alley — one of the oldest in Scotland — has been in continuous use for centuries. The pub's name derives from the sheep's head broth that was once a local delicacy.
- Duddingston Loch, a natural freshwater loch at the foot of Arthur's Seat, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of Edinburgh's most important wildlife habitats. The loch supports breeding populations of great crested grebes, tufted ducks, and other waterbirds, and is managed as a nature reserve by Historic Environment Scotland. The famous painting "Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch" by Henry Raeburn depicts the loch in winter.
