About Newtown St Boswells
- Newtown St Boswells was developed in the 1840s and 1850s around the junction of the North British Railway's Waverley Route and the branch line to Kelso. The village was planned on a grid pattern, with streets of stone-built terraced houses for railway workers and their families. The railway junction made Newtown St Boswells the most important transport hub in the Borders for over a century.
- The Borders General Hospital, which opened in 1988, serves the entire Scottish Borders region — a population of around 115,000 people spread across 1,800 square miles. The hospital has a full accident and emergency department, maternity unit, and surgical facilities, and is the only district general hospital in the region. Its location in Newtown St Boswells, at the geographic centre of the Borders, was chosen to minimise travel times for patients from across the region.
- Scottish Borders Council, which administers the largest local authority area in Scotland by land area, has its headquarters in Newtown St Boswells. The council was created in 1996 when the four former Borders districts — Berwickshire, Ettrick and Lauderdale, Roxburgh, and Tweeddale — were merged into a single unitary authority. The council's headquarters building, a modern office complex on the edge of the village, houses around 500 staff.
- The Waverley Route, which passed through Newtown St Boswells on its way from Edinburgh to Carlisle, was one of the most controversial railway closures of the Beeching era. The line was closed in 1969 despite fierce local opposition, and the closure left the Borders as the largest area of mainland Britain without a railway. The partial reopening of the line as the Borders Railway in 2015 — as far as Tweedbank, three miles from Newtown St Boswells — was a major milestone for the region.
