About Fareham
- Portchester Castle, on the shore of Portsmouth Harbour a few miles from Fareham, is the best-preserved Roman fort in northern Europe — a massive enclosure of Roman walls, built around 285 AD as one of the Saxon Shore forts designed to defend the coast against raids from across the North Sea. The walls, which stand up to six metres high and are reinforced by 20 projecting bastions, enclose an area of over three hectares and are built of flint and tile in the distinctive Roman manner. Within the Roman walls, the Normans built a castle in the 12th century, and the combination of Roman fortification and Norman castle makes Portchester one of the most historically layered sites in Britain. The castle was used as a prison for French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars, and the graffiti carved by the prisoners on the walls of the keep is one of the most poignant records of captivity in British history.
- Titchfield Abbey, a few miles from Fareham, was a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1232 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537, when it was converted into a country house by Thomas Wriothesley, the first Earl of Southampton. The house, known as Place House, was visited by Henry VIII and later became the home of the third Earl of Southampton, who was the patron of William Shakespeare — and it is possible, though not certain, that Shakespeare visited Titchfield and that some of his plays were performed there. The house was demolished in the 18th century and the ruins, which preserve the gatehouse and fragments of the monastic buildings, are now managed by English Heritage.
- The Meon Valley, which runs northward from Fareham through the Hampshire countryside to the South Downs, is one of the most beautiful river valleys in southern England — a landscape of chalk streams, water meadows, and ancient villages that has been relatively little affected by modern development. The River Meon, which rises near East Meon and flows south to the Solent at Hill Head, is one of the finest chalk streams in Hampshire, supporting populations of brown trout and the rare white-clawed crayfish. The valley's villages — Wickham, Droxford, Meonstoke, and Exton — are among the most attractive in Hampshire, and the Meon Valley Trail, a long-distance path following the route of a former railway line, offers one of the finest walking and cycling routes in the county.
