- Saltburn Pier, built in 1869, is the last remaining pier on the north-east coast of England. The original pier was 1,500 feet long, but storm damage reduced it to its current length of 681 feet. Pease laid out the town on a grid plan with wide streets and substantial Victorian villas, and the Zetland Hotel — now converted to flats — was the first hotel in England to be served directly by railway. The town retains much of its original Victorian character.
