About Haymarket
- Haymarket Station, which opened in 1842, is the second-busiest railway station in Scotland and one of the oldest surviving railway stations in the country. The station was built by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway and retains much of its original Victorian character, including its distinctive clock tower. It serves as the main interchange for passengers travelling between Edinburgh city centre and the west of Scotland.
- The area around Haymarket takes its name from the hay market that was held here from the eighteenth century, when the western approach to Edinburgh was lined with inns and stabling for horses. The market served the needs of travellers and drovers bringing livestock to the city, and the area's commercial character has persisted through successive waves of development.
- Murrayfield Stadium, a short walk from Haymarket, is the home of Scottish Rugby and the largest stadium in Scotland with a capacity of over 67,000. On international match days the area around Haymarket becomes one of the busiest in Edinburgh, with tens of thousands of supporters converging on the station and the surrounding pubs and restaurants.
