About Selkirk
- The Selkirk Common Riding, held each June, is the largest mounted gathering in the world — over 400 riders follow the Standard Bearer as he rides the town's ancient marches. The ceremony commemorates the Battle of Flodden in 1513, where Selkirk sent 80 men to fight with King James IV and only one — Fletcher — returned, carrying a captured English flag. The casting of the colours in the Market Place, where the Standard Bearer dips the flag in memory of the fallen, is one of the most moving ceremonies in Scotland.

The recipe is said to have been created by Robbie Douglas, a baker who supplied the royal household, and Queen Victoria is said to have eaten only Selkirk bannock when she visited Sir Walter Scott's granddaughter at Abbotsford. The bannock is still baked by local bakers using the original recipe.
