About Balfour
- Balfour Castle on Shapinsay was built in 1848 by Colonel David Balfour, who transformed the island's earlier house into a Victorian Gothic mansion and redesigned the island's agricultural landscape with a model farm, planned village, and ornamental gardens. The castle, which is now operated as a small hotel, is one of the most distinctive buildings in Orkney and reflects the ambitions of the Victorian landed gentry who sought to improve and modernise their estates. Shapinsay is one of the most accessible of the Orkney islands, with a regular ferry service from Kirkwall, and its combination of agricultural landscape, coastal scenery, and the dramatic presence of the castle makes it one of the most rewarding of the smaller Orkney islands to visit.
