- Dryburgh Abbey, a mile south of St Boswells on a wooded bend of the Tweed, is the most romantically situated of the four great Borders abbeys. Founded in 1150 for Premonstratensian canons, the abbey was repeatedly destroyed by English raids and never fully rebuilt, giving it a ruined grandeur that inspired Sir Walter Scott and J.M.W.
