About Pumpherston
- The Pumpherston Oil Works, established in 1883, was one of the most important shale oil refineries in the world during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At its peak the works employed hundreds of workers and produced paraffin, lubricating oil, and other petroleum products from locally mined shale. The works closed in 1964 and the site has since been redeveloped.
- Pumpherston was a planned industrial village, built by the oil company to house its workers. The village retains much of its original layout, with rows of stone-built cottages that were constructed in the 1880s and 1890s to accommodate the workforce.
- The Almond Valley Heritage Centre, a short drive from the village, tells the story of the shale oil industry through interactive exhibits, a working farm, and a narrow-gauge railway. It is one of the most visited family attractions in West Lothian.
- Pumpherston Golf Club, one of the oldest golf clubs in West Lothian, was established in 1895 and has a nine-hole course set in attractive parkland close to the village.
