According to local tradition, a bale of silk could be passed from the shore to the top of the village without ever going outside, through a network of secret passages connecting the houses.

Walkers completing the route traditionally dip their boots in the sea at Robin Hood's Bay, having started by dipping them in the Irish Sea at St Bees. The walk passes through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors.
