About Sevenoaks
- Knole, the vast house set in a 1,000-acre deer park on the edge of Sevenoaks, is one of the largest private houses in England — a complex of courtyards, towers, and ranges built over several centuries that contains 365 rooms, 52 staircases, and 7 courtyards, supposedly representing the days, weeks, and days of the week in a year. The house was built in the 15th century by the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Bourchier and was later given to Henry VIII, who used it as a royal palace before granting it to the Sackville family in 1566. The Sackvilles have lived at Knole ever since, and the house contains one of the finest collections of 17th-century furniture and textiles in Britain, including a set of silver furniture given to the first Duke of Dorset by William III. Vita Sackville-West, who grew up at Knole, used the house as the inspiration for her novel Orlando.
- Chartwell, the country house near Westerham that was Winston Churchill's home from 1924 until his death in 1965, is one of the most visited historic houses in Britain — a place where visitors can see the rooms where Churchill lived and worked, the studio where he painted, and the garden he designed and built with his own hands. Churchill bought Chartwell in 1922 against the advice of his wife Clementine, who found it too large and too expensive, and the house became the centre of his private life — the place where he wrote his histories, entertained his friends, and retreated from the pressures of political life. The house is now owned by the National Trust and preserves Churchill's study, his library, and his collection of paintings, which reveal an unexpected talent for landscape and still-life painting.
- Ightham Mote, a medieval moated manor house in the Weald a few miles from Sevenoaks, is one of the most complete examples of a medieval manor house in England — a building that has been continuously inhabited since the 14th century and that preserves, behind its moat and gatehouse, a remarkable sequence of medieval and Tudor rooms including a great hall, a chapel, and a crypt. The house was acquired by the National Trust in 1985 in a state of serious disrepair and has been the subject of one of the most extensive and expensive restoration projects in the Trust's history, costing over £10 million and taking twenty years to complete. The restoration revealed extraordinary details of the building's construction and decoration, including medieval wall paintings and a Tudor fireplace of exceptional quality.
