About Addiewell
- Addiewell was at the heart of the West Lothian shale oil industry, which was founded by James Young — known as "Paraffin Young" — who discovered in the 1850s that oil could be extracted from the local shale rock by heating it. Young's process, which he patented in 1850, was the world's first commercially successful oil industry, predating the American oil boom by nearly a decade. The industry employed thousands of workers in West Lothian for over a century, and the distinctive red bings — the spoil heaps left by the shale mines — are now recognised as an important part of the industrial heritage of Scotland and are being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status.
