About Aylesford
- Kit's Coty, a short distance from Aylesford, is a Neolithic megalithic monument — the remains of a long barrow burial chamber — that dates from around 3000 BC and is one of the most impressive prehistoric monuments in Kent. The monument consists of three large upright stones supporting a massive capstone, and it stands in a field above the Medway Valley with views across the surrounding countryside. The Aylesford Priory — known as The Friars — was founded by the Carmelite order in 1242 and is one of the oldest Carmelite houses in the world; it was returned to the Carmelites in 1949 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries and is now a place of pilgrimage and retreat.
