About Belvedere
- Belvedere takes its name from the Belvedere House estate, which occupied the area in the eighteenth century. The neighbourhood was developed as a working-class residential area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, largely to house workers employed in the industrial and manufacturing businesses that lined the Thames at Erith and Belvedere. The Crossness Pumping Station, which lies close to Belvedere on the Thames marshes, is a remarkable Victorian engineering monument — a cathedral-like structure built by Sir Joseph Bazalgette in the 1860s as part of London's revolutionary sewerage system, and now a Grade I listed building open to the public on selected days.
