About Berkeley
- Berkeley Castle is one of the most historically significant castles in England and is famous as the place where King Edward II was murdered in 1327, allegedly on the orders of his wife Queen Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer. The castle has been owned by the Berkeley family for over 900 years and is still their private residence, though it is open to the public. Edward Jenner, who was born in Berkeley in 1749, developed the world's first vaccine when he demonstrated in 1796 that inoculation with cowpox provided protection against smallpox — a discovery that is estimated to have saved hundreds of millions of lives and led directly to the global eradication of smallpox in 1980.
