About Brandon
- Brandon Colliery, which operated from 1856 until its closure in the 20th century, was one of the deepest coal mines in County Durham. At its peak it employed hundreds of men from the surrounding villages, and the tight-knit mining community developed its own strong culture of mutual aid, brass bands, and working men's clubs. The colliery's winding gear stood as a landmark in the valley for generations before being demolished after closure.
