Local knowledge — Private Hire in Brotton
Brotton is a village in the Redcar and Cleveland borough, 4 miles west of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. A former ironstone mining community on the northern edge of the Cleveland Hills, it sits between the coast and the moors and is within easy reach of both Saltburn beach and the North York Moors National Park.

About Brotton
- Brotton was at the heart of the Cleveland ironstone mining boom of the 19th century. The ironstone seams in the hills above the village were among the richest in England, and the mines employed hundreds of workers at their peak. The ironstone was transported by a mineral railway down to the coast at Skinningrove, where it was loaded onto ships for the blast furnaces of Teesside. The last mine in the area closed in the 1960s.
- The village sits on the northern escarpment of the Cleveland Hills, and the views from the higher ground above Brotton take in the Tees Valley, the North Sea, and on clear days the Yorkshire coast as far south as Flamborough Head. The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes through the hills above the village.
- Brotton has a strong community identity, shaped by generations of mining families. The village has its own primary school, a church, and a range of local facilities. The community has worked hard to maintain its sense of place in the face of the economic changes that followed the closure of the mines.
- The area around Brotton is rich in industrial archaeology, with the remains of 19th-century ironstone workings visible in the hills above the village. The Cleveland Hills are dotted with the spoil heaps, adits, and tramway routes of the Victorian mining industry, and the landscape has been shaped by over a century of mineral extraction.
