About Connel
- The Falls of Lora at Connel are a tidal rapid caused by the narrow mouth of Loch Etive, which creates powerful currents as the tide ebbs and flows. The Connel Bridge, built in 1903 as a railway bridge and converted to road use in 1966, is one of the largest cantilever bridges in Europe and was originally designed to carry the Callander and Oban Railway. Ben Cruachan, visible across Loch Etive from the village, contains a pumped-storage hydroelectric power station inside the mountain — known as the Hollow Mountain — which can generate 440 megawatts of electricity and is one of the most remarkable engineering achievements in Scotland.
