About Dirleton
- Dirleton Castle, which dates from the thirteenth century, is one of the most complete and best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland. The castle was built by the de Vaux family and later passed to the Halyburton and Ruthven families before being slighted by General Monck in 1650. The castle's gardens, which include a Victorian Arts and Crafts garden and a herbaceous border said to be the longest in the world, are particularly celebrated.
- Fidra Island, which lies just offshore from Dirleton, is believed by some scholars to have been the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Stevenson spent time in the area as a child and would have been familiar with the island's distinctive silhouette. The island is now a nature reserve managed by the RSPB and supports a large colony of puffins.
- Yellowcraig Beach, a short distance from Dirleton, is one of the finest beaches in East Lothian and offers views across the Firth of Forth to Fidra Island and the Bass Rock. The beach is backed by dunes and woodland and is a popular destination for families and dog walkers throughout the year.
