Local knowledge — Private Hire in Downton
Downton is a large village in southern Wiltshire, situated in the SP5 postcode area on the River Avon between Salisbury and Fordingbridge. The village has a long history as a centre of the leather tanning industry — the Downton tannery, which operated for centuries on the banks of the Avon, was one of the most important in southern England — and the village retains a strong industrial heritage alongside its attractive medieval and Georgian architecture. Downton is well placed for exploring both the Wiltshire downland to the north and the New Forest to the south. About Downton
- Downton's tannery, which stands on the banks of the River Avon in the heart of the village, is one of the last surviving traditional tanneries in Britain and a remarkable piece of living industrial history. Tanning — the process of converting animal hides into leather — has been carried out on this site for at least five hundred years, using the bark of oak trees to tan the hides in a series of pits that are still visible today. The tannery produces high-quality leather for bookbinding, saddlery, and specialist uses, and the site is a Grade II listed building. Downton also has a connection to the Trafalgar estate nearby, which was given to the family of Admiral Lord Nelson after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and remains in the family's possession.
