Local knowledge — Private Hire in Newport
Newport is a district of Middlesbrough on the north bank of the River Tees, historically one of the most industrialised parts of the town. The Newport Bridge — one of the finest examples of a vertical lift bridge in England — crosses the Tees here, and the area has a strong industrial heritage connected to the steel and shipbuilding industries.

About Newport
- Newport Bridge, opened in 1934, is one of the finest vertical lift bridges in England. The bridge carries the A1032 road across the River Tees and was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson — the same firm that designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The central span can be raised to allow tall vessels to pass, though this function is rarely used today. The bridge is a Grade II* listed structure.
- The Newport area was at the heart of Middlesbrough's industrial expansion in the 19th century, when ironworks, shipyards, and engineering works lined the banks of the Tees. The Newport Ironworks, established in 1864, was one of the largest in Teesside and employed thousands of workers at its peak. The industrial heritage of the area is reflected in the street names and the surviving Victorian buildings.
- The Transporter Bridge, a mile downstream from Newport, is one of the most iconic structures in Teesside. Built in 1911, the bridge carries a gondola suspended from a high-level gantry across the Tees, transporting vehicles and pedestrians between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence. The bridge is one of only a handful of transporter bridges still in operation in the world.
- Newport has undergone significant regeneration in recent decades as the heavy industries that once dominated the area have closed. New housing, retail, and commercial developments have replaced the former industrial sites, and the riverside has been transformed into a more attractive environment for residents and visitors.
