About Rosewell
- Rosewell was established as a planned mining village in the nineteenth century to house workers from the local collieries. The village's grid-pattern streets and uniform stone cottages reflect the organised approach to housing that was characteristic of the Scottish coal industry at its peak. The last local colliery closed in the mid-twentieth century, but the village's character as a close-knit mining community has persisted.
- The area around Rosewell contains several important sites associated with the Sinclair family, the powerful medieval dynasty whose seat was at Rosslyn Castle. The Sinclairs played a significant role in Scottish history from the eleventh century onwards and their legacy is visible throughout the North Esk valley in the form of castles, chapels, and estate buildings.
- Rosewell is within easy walking distance of Roslin Glen Country Park, one of the most beautiful natural areas in Midlothian. The glen follows the North Esk through a deep wooded gorge and contains a variety of wildlife including otters, kingfishers, and dippers. The path through the glen connects Rosewell to Rosslyn Chapel and Penicuik.
