About Smethwick
- Galton Bridge in Smethwick, designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1829, is one of the finest cast-iron bridges in England, spanning the Birmingham Canal at a height of 70 feet. The bridge was the highest single-span iron bridge in the world when it was built and is now a Grade I listed structure.
- Smethwick was the site of one of the most controversial parliamentary elections in British history — the 1964 Smethwick by-election, in which the Conservative candidate Peter Griffiths defeated the Labour Foreign Secretary Patrick Gordon Walker using the slogan "If you want a nigger for a neighbour, vote Labour." The result shocked the country and led to the Race Relations Act of 1965.
- The Birmingham Canal, which runs through Smethwick, was one of the most important waterways in the Industrial Revolution, connecting Birmingham to the national canal network and carrying coal, iron, and manufactured goods to markets across the country. The canal is now a popular leisure route for walkers and cyclists.
