About Thornton
- Thornton Junction was one of the most important railway junctions in Fife, where the Edinburgh to Dundee main line met the Fife Circle line and the branch lines to Leven and Methil. The junction was a major centre of railway operations in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a large locomotive depot and marshalling yard.
- The Thornton locomotive depot, which operated from the 1840s to the 1960s, was one of the largest in Scotland and housed the engines that worked the Fife coalfield lines. At its peak the depot had over 100 locomotives and employed hundreds of men as drivers, firemen, and maintenance workers.
- The River Ore, which flows through the Thornton area, rises in the Lomond Hills and flows eastward to the sea at Earlsferry. The river is a popular fishing destination for brown trout and is one of the most attractive rivers in central Fife.
- Thornton is within easy reach of Glenrothes, Fife's new town, which was designated in 1948 and is now the administrative centre of Fife Council. Glenrothes has one of the largest collections of public art of any town in Scotland, with over 100 sculptures and artworks installed throughout the town.
