About Norton-on-Derwent
- Norton and Malton are twin towns on opposite banks of the River Derwent, connected by a bridge in the town centre. The two towns function as a single community, sharing a railway station, schools, and many facilities. Norton is the larger of the two in terms of population and has a more residential character, while Malton has the historic market place and town centre.
- The Vale of Pickering, which stretches east from Norton and Malton towards the coast, is one of the most productive agricultural areas in Yorkshire. The vale was once a glacial lake, and the flat, fertile land is used for arable farming and market gardening.
- Norton has a strong racing heritage, with several racehorse training yards in and around the town. The Malton and Norton area is one of the most important racehorse training centres in the north of England, second only to Middleham in the Yorkshire Dales.
- Eden Camp, a few miles south of Norton, is one of the most unusual museums in England. The museum is housed in a former prisoner-of-war camp and tells the story of civilian life in Britain during the Second World War.
