About Southampton
- Southampton was the port from which the RMS Titanic sailed on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 — a departure that ended in catastrophe four days later when the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank with the loss of over 1,500 lives. The disaster had a devastating impact on Southampton, which provided the majority of the crew — over 500 Southampton men died in the sinking, and almost every street in the working-class districts of the city lost at least one resident. The SeaCity Museum, which opened in 2012 to mark the centenary of the disaster, tells the story of the Titanic and its connection with Southampton through an extraordinary collection of artefacts, photographs, and personal testimonies that bring the human scale of the tragedy into focus.
- Southampton's medieval town walls, which survive in remarkable completeness along the western and southern sides of the old town, are among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Britain — a circuit of walls, towers, and gates built between the 13th and 15th centuries that enclosed the medieval town and protected it from attack from the sea. The walls were built in response to a French raid in 1338 that destroyed much of the town, and they were strengthened and extended over the following century. The Bargate, the northern gateway of the medieval town, is the most impressive surviving structure — a massive stone gatehouse that served as the town's main entrance and as a guildhall and court, and that is now one of the most recognisable landmarks in Southampton.
- The Ageas Bowl, Hampshire's cricket ground on the northern edge of Southampton, is one of the most modern and well-appointed cricket grounds in England — a stadium that has hosted Test matches, One Day Internationals, and Twenty20 matches since its opening in 2001. The ground, which has a capacity of around 25,000 for major matches, is set in the Hampshire countryside and offers views across the surrounding farmland that give it a character unlike the urban grounds of most county cricket clubs. Hampshire Cricket Club, which was founded in 1863, has produced a number of England internationals including Colin Cowdrey, Derek Shackleton, and more recently James Vince, and the club's history is one of the most distinguished in county cricket.
