About King's Lynn
- King's Lynn was one of the most important ports in medieval England — a Hanseatic League trading post whose merchants dealt in wool, cloth, grain, and fish with partners across northern Europe from the Baltic to the Low Countries. The town's wealth in the 14th and 15th centuries is still visible in its extraordinary collection of medieval merchants' houses, guildhalls, and warehouses, which survive in greater concentration here than almost anywhere else in England. The Tuesday Market Place, one of the largest market squares in the country, was the commercial heart of this trading empire, and the Hanseatic Warehouse on St Margaret's Lane — built by the merchants of the Hanseatic League in the 15th century — is the only surviving Hanseatic warehouse in England.
- Sandringham Estate, a few miles north of King's Lynn, has been the private country retreat of the British royal family since 1862, when the Prince of Wales — later Edward VII — purchased the property. The house, rebuilt in the Jacobean style in 1870, is where the royal family traditionally spends Christmas and New Year, and it was at Sandringham that both George V and George VI died. The estate covers around 8,000 hectares of Norfolk countryside and includes farms, woodland, and the church of St Mary Magdalene where royal christenings and memorial services are held. The house and gardens are open to the public for much of the year, and the estate's country park offers walking and cycling through the Norfolk landscape.
- Fanny Burney, the novelist and diarist whose work bridged the gap between the 18th-century novel and the Romantic period, was born in King's Lynn in 1752, the daughter of the music historian Charles Burney. Her first novel Evelina, published anonymously in 1778, was an immediate sensation — praised by Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, and Joshua Reynolds — and established her as one of the leading literary figures of her age. Her later novels Cecilia and Camilla were equally successful, and Jane Austen acknowledged a debt to Burney's technique of social observation and ironic narration. Burney's diaries and letters, which she kept throughout her long life, are among the most vivid accounts of 18th-century literary and court society in existence.
