- Southend Pier is the longest pleasure pier in the world — stretching 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, a distance that required the construction of a railway to carry visitors to the pier head and back. The pier was built in its current iron form between 1887 and 1890, replacing an earlier wooden structure, and at its peak in the 1940s and 1950s it attracted over five million visitors a year.
