About Bigton
- St Ninian's Isle, which lies just offshore from Bigton and is connected to the mainland by a spectacular double beach of white sand known as a tombolo, was the site of one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Scotland. In 1958, a schoolboy named Douglas Coutts, who was helping with an excavation led by Aberdeen University, discovered a hoard of 28 pieces of Pictish silverware buried beneath a stone slab in the ruins of a medieval chapel on the island. The St Ninian's Isle Treasure, which dates from around 800 AD, is one of the finest collections of Pictish metalwork ever found and is now displayed in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
