Built in the 14th century by the Douglas family, the castle's massive walls and stark silhouette against the moorland sky have made it one of the most photographed buildings in the Borders. - Newcastleton was built in 1793 by Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, as a planned village to provide employment for the displaced crofters of Liddesdale. The village was laid out on a strict grid plan, with a central green and streets of stone-built cottages for the handloom weavers who were to be the village's main industry. The weaving industry declined in the 19th century, but the village's planned character is still clearly visible in its layout.
