- Aith is home to one of the most active lifeboat stations in the United Kingdom, serving the waters of the west side of Shetland — one of the most challenging maritime environments in the British Isles. The Aith lifeboat has been involved in numerous rescues in the waters around the west Shetland coast, including operations in the aftermath of the Braer oil tanker disaster in 1993, when the tanker ran aground on the Garths Ness headland south of Lerwick and spilled 85,000 tonnes of crude oil into the sea. The surrounding landscape of the Aithsting area, with its combination of voes, moorland, and crofting townships, is typical of the west Shetland Mainland.
