- The Arnol Blackhouse, which is preserved in its original condition with a central peat fire and no chimney — the smoke escaping through the thatch — is one of the most remarkable vernacular buildings in Scotland and provides a vivid impression of the living conditions of Hebridean crofters in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The village's Atlantic setting, with the vast peat moors of Lewis stretching inland and the ocean visible from every high point, gives it a character that is unlike anywhere else in Britain.
