About Barvas
- The Barvas area of Lewis is associated with the Lewis Revival of 1949–52, one of the most remarkable religious revivals in twentieth-century Britain. The revival, which began in the parish of Barvas and spread across Lewis and beyond, was characterised by intense religious experiences, large gatherings, and a widespread transformation of the moral and spiritual life of the communities affected. The revival was associated with the ministry of Duncan Campbell, a Scottish evangelist, and with the prayers of two elderly sisters — Peggy and Christine Smith — who are said to have prayed for revival for months before it began. The Lewis Revival remains one of the most celebrated events in the history of Scottish Christianity.
