About Barnton
- The Royal Burgess Golfing Society, based in Barnton, was founded in 1735 and is widely regarded as the oldest golf club in the world. The society predates the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews by several years and has maintained continuous records of its membership and activities since the eighteenth century. The current course at Barnton was laid out in 1894 and is one of the finest parkland courses in Scotland.
- Lauriston Castle, which stands on the edge of Barnton overlooking the Firth of Forth, is a sixteenth-century tower house that was extended in the Jacobean style in the early twentieth century. The castle and its grounds were bequeathed to the City of Edinburgh in 1926 and are now managed as a museum, with the interior preserved largely as it was when the last private owners lived there.
