About Cramond
- Cramond has been continuously inhabited for longer than almost any other site in Scotland. Roman soldiers built a fort here around 142 AD as part of the Antonine Wall frontier system, and the remains of the fort, including a bathhouse and granaries, have been excavated and are visible in the village. A Roman lioness sculpture discovered in the River Almond in 1997 is now displayed in the National Museum of Scotland.
- Cramond Island, which sits in the Firth of Forth a short distance from the village, is accessible on foot across a tidal causeway at low tide. The island was used as a military installation during both World Wars and retains concrete gun emplacements and other wartime structures. Visitors must check tide times carefully, as the causeway floods rapidly and several people have been stranded on the island over the years.
- The Cramond Inn, which has stood on the waterfront since at least the seventeenth century, is one of Edinburgh's most historic pubs and a popular destination for walkers completing the River Almond Walkway. The inn is said to have been visited by Robert Louis Stevenson and other notable Edinburgh figures, and its riverside setting makes it one of the most atmospheric hostelries in the city.
