- Bedford is the birthplace of John Bunyan, the Puritan preacher and writer who composed The Pilgrim's Progress while imprisoned in Bedford Gaol for preaching without a licence — a sentence he served for twelve years between 1660 and 1672. The Pilgrim's Progress, published in 1678, is one of the most widely read books in the English language, translated into over 200 languages and outsold only by the Bible in the centuries following its publication. The allegory of Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City, through places such as the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, and the Valley of the Shadow of Death, has entered the English language as a source of metaphors and imagery that are still in common use today. The John Bunyan Museum in Bedford preserves the story of his life and work.
