About Luton
- Luton was the centre of the British hat-making industry for over three centuries — from the early 17th century, when Flemish immigrants introduced the craft of plaiting straw for hat-making, until the mid-20th century, when changing fashions and foreign competition destroyed the trade. At its peak in the late 19th century, Luton produced millions of hats a year, and the town's prosperity was built entirely on the hat trade — the factories, the warehouses, and the rows of terraced houses for the workers were all products of the hat industry. The Stockwood Discovery Centre preserves a collection of hats and hat-making equipment that tells the story of this vanished industry, and the town's coat of arms still features a straw hat as a reminder of the trade that made it.
- Luton Town FC, known as the Hatters in honour of the town's hat-making heritage, achieved one of the most remarkable stories in recent English football history — rising from the fourth tier of English football in 2014 to the Premier League in 2023, a journey of nine years and four promotions that culminated in a play-off final victory at Wembley. The club's Kenilworth Road ground, which has been their home since 1905, is one of the most intimate and atmospheric grounds in English football — a compact, old-fashioned stadium where the stands are so close to the pitch that the noise is extraordinary. The club's promotion to the Premier League was celebrated across the town as a vindication of the community spirit and resilience that has always characterised Luton.
- Luton Hoo, a great country house set in 1,500 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown on the southern edge of Luton, was for much of the 20th century the home of one of the finest private art collections in Britain — assembled by the diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher and including works by Rembrandt, Titian, and Rubens, as well as an extraordinary collection of Fabergé objects. The house, which was designed by Robert Adam in the 18th century and remodelled several times since, is now a luxury hotel, and the parkland — with its lakes, woodland, and sweeping lawns — is one of the most beautiful designed landscapes in Hertfordshire. The estate has been used as a film location for numerous productions including Four Weddings and a Funeral.
