About Caerphilly
- Caerphilly Castle, which was built by Gilbert de Clare between 1268 and 1271, is the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in Britain after Windsor — a concentric fortress of extraordinary scale and sophistication that was designed to control the approaches to the Vale of Glamorgan and to overawe the Welsh princes of Glamorgan. The castle's system of water defences — a series of lakes and islands created by damming the local streams — is one of the most impressive examples of medieval military engineering in Britain, and the castle's leaning tower, which tilts at a greater angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa, is one of the most unusual features of any castle in Wales.
- Caerphilly cheese, the crumbly white cheese that takes its name from the town, is one of the most important Welsh food products — a cheese that was originally made in the farms of the Vale of Glamorgan and the surrounding area and that was sold in the markets of Caerphilly to the miners of the South Wales valleys. The cheese, which is mild, slightly salty, and crumbly in texture, was popular with miners because it was easy to carry underground and provided a good source of energy and protein. The tradition of making Caerphilly cheese declined in the 20th century, but it has been revived in recent years by artisan cheesemakers in Wales and Somerset.
- Tommy Cooper, the comedian and magician who was one of the most popular entertainers in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s, was born in Caerphilly in 1921. Cooper's comedy, which was based on his apparent incompetence as a magician and his ability to make audiences laugh at his failures, was one of the most distinctive acts in British entertainment, and his catchphrase 'Just like that!' became one of the most recognisable in British comedy. Cooper died on stage during a live television broadcast in 1984, and his connection with Caerphilly is commemorated by a bronze statue in the town centre.
