About Chichester
- Fishbourne Roman Palace, discovered in 1960 during the construction of a water main, is the largest known Roman residential building in Britain — a palace built around 75 AD that covered an area of over four hectares and contained some of the finest mosaic floors in the country. The palace was probably built for Cogidubnus, a local king who collaborated with the Roman invaders and was rewarded with Roman citizenship and a magnificent residence, and it reflects the extraordinary wealth and sophistication of the Roman elite in Britain. The north wing of the palace, which is preserved under a purpose-built museum, contains 21 mosaic floors, including the famous Cupid on a Dolphin mosaic, and the formal garden — which has been reconstructed based on archaeological evidence — is the only known example of a first-century Roman garden in Britain.
