About Worthing
- Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest while staying in Worthing in the summer of 1894 — a fact commemorated by the character of Ernest Worthing, whose surname Wilde took from the town where he was working. Wilde rented a house in The Esplanade and spent several weeks writing the play, which was first performed at the St James's Theatre in London in February 1895 to immediate acclaim. The play's wit, its satirical portrait of Victorian society, and its exploration of identity and deception have made it one of the most performed plays in the English language, and Worthing's contribution to its creation is one of the most charming footnotes in the history of English literature.
- Cissbury Ring, the Iron Age hillfort on the South Downs above Worthing, is one of the largest and best-preserved hillforts in Britain — a massive earthwork enclosing 26 hectares, built around 250 BC and occupied for several centuries before being abandoned in the Roman period. The fort's ramparts, which still stand up to five metres high in places, enclose a complex of flint mines that were worked in the Neolithic period — some of the earliest industrial workings in Britain, producing the flint tools that were traded across southern England. The hillfort offers panoramic views across the Sussex coastal plain to the sea, and the walk along the ramparts is one of the finest short walks in the South Downs National Park.
- Worthing's pier, which extends 300 metres into the sea, is one of the best-preserved Victorian piers in Britain — a structure that has survived storms, fires, and the general decline of the seaside resort to remain a working pleasure pier with a theatre, amusement arcade, and café. The pier was built in 1862 and extended in 1889, and it has been the subject of several restoration projects that have preserved its Victorian character while updating its facilities. The pier's theatre, the Southern Pavilion, hosts a programme of entertainment throughout the year, and the pier remains one of the most popular attractions on the Sussex coast.
