About Horsham
- Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the greatest Romantic poets, was born at Field Place near Horsham in 1792 and spent his childhood in the town and the surrounding countryside. Shelley's early life in Horsham was marked by the conflict between his rebellious temperament and the conservative values of his family and community — he was expelled from Eton for writing a pamphlet on atheism and later from Oxford for the same reason. His poetry, which includes Ode to the West Wind, Prometheus Unbound, and Adonais, is among the most ambitious and technically accomplished in the English language, and his political radicalism — his advocacy of democracy, vegetarianism, and free love — made him one of the most controversial figures of his age. Horsham Museum holds a collection of Shelley memorabilia.
- Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, a few miles south of Horsham, is one of the most spectacular woodland gardens in Britain — a 240-acre valley garden created in the late 19th century by Sir Edmund Loder, who planted the slopes of a series of hammer ponds with rhododendrons, azaleas, and exotic trees from around the world. The garden is famous for its spring display, when the rhododendrons and azaleas flower simultaneously in an explosion of colour that draws visitors from across the country, and for its wallabies — a colony of Bennett's wallabies that has lived in the garden since the 1890s and now numbers around 50 animals. The garden was closed for many years and has recently been restored and reopened to the public.
- The Carfax, the open square at the heart of Horsham, is one of the most attractive market places in Sussex — a space that has been the commercial and social centre of the town since the medieval period, surrounded by buildings from every era of the town's history. The Carfax takes its name from the Latin quadrifurcus, meaning four-forked, referring to the junction of four roads that meet at the square, and it has been the site of the weekly market since at least the 13th century. The market, which still takes place every Thursday and Saturday, is one of the oldest continuously operating markets in Sussex, and the Carfax's combination of historic buildings, independent shops, and market stalls gives Horsham a character that distinguishes it from many other Sussex towns.
