About Guildford
- Guildford's High Street, which descends steeply from the castle to the River Wey, is one of the most attractive town centre streets in the south of England — a cobbled hill lined with buildings from every period of the town's history, from the medieval Guildhall with its projecting clock to the Victorian and Edwardian shopfronts that line the lower part of the street. The Guildhall, which dates from 1683, is famous for its overhanging clock — a gilded bracket clock that projects over the street and has been a landmark of Guildford since the 17th century. The street's gradient, which makes it one of the steepest shopping streets in England, gives it an unusual character and offers views across the rooftops to the Surrey Hills.
- Guildford Cathedral, completed in 1961 after a construction process interrupted by the Second World War, is one of only two Anglican cathedrals built on a new site in England in the 20th century — the other being Liverpool Cathedral. The cathedral, designed by Edward Maufe in a simplified Gothic style, stands on Stag Hill above the town and is built of pale brick that gives it a distinctive warm colour in sunlight. The cathedral's interior is notable for its simplicity and the quality of its light, and it contains a number of significant works of art including a sculpture by Eric Gill. The cathedral was used as a filming location for The Omen in 1976, and its hilltop position makes it one of the most visible landmarks in Surrey.
