- Farnham is one of the best-preserved Georgian market towns in Surrey — a place where the 18th-century street pattern, building stock, and social geography survive with remarkable completeness. The town's prosperity in the Georgian period was built on the hop trade — Farnham hops were among the most prized in England, and the town's maltings, hop gardens, and merchants' houses reflect the wealth generated by this trade. The Georgian buildings that line the Castle Street and the Borough give Farnham a character of quiet elegance that distinguishes it from many other Surrey towns, and the town has been recognised as one of the finest examples of Georgian townscape in the south-east.
- Waverley Abbey, a few miles from Farnham, was the first Cistercian monastery in England — founded in 1128 by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester, as a daughter house of L'Aumône in France. The Cistercians, who sought a stricter observance of the Benedictine rule, chose remote and austere sites for their monasteries, and Waverley's position in the valley of the River Wey, surrounded by water meadows and woodland, reflects the order's preference for places of natural beauty and isolation. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536, and the ruins that survive — including the chapter house, the lay brothers' range, and fragments of the church — give some sense of the scale and quality of the original buildings.
- William Cobbett, the radical journalist and political reformer who wrote Rural Rides — one of the most important accounts of the English countryside in the early 19th century — was born in Farnham in 1763. Cobbett's Rural Rides, published in 1830, describes his journeys on horseback through the southern counties of England in the 1820s, recording the condition of the agricultural labourers and the impact of the enclosure movement and the industrial revolution on the rural poor. Cobbett's passionate advocacy for the rights of the rural working class and his fierce criticism of the political establishment made him one of the most influential journalists of his age, and his connection with Farnham is commemorated by a plaque on the house where he was born.
