About Basingstoke
- Basing House, on the eastern edge of Basingstoke, was the site of one of the longest sieges of the English Civil War — a three-year defence of the house by its Catholic owner, the Marquess of Winchester, against Parliamentary forces that ended in October 1645 when Oliver Cromwell himself led the assault that finally broke the garrison. The house, which was one of the largest private residences in England, was systematically demolished after its capture, and the ruins that survive give only a partial impression of the scale of the original building. The siege of Basing House was notable for the presence among the defenders of the architect Inigo Jones, who was captured when the house fell and was carried out wrapped in a blanket, having lost most of his possessions.
- The Vyne, a Tudor country house a few miles north of Basingstoke managed by the National Trust, is one of the finest examples of early Tudor domestic architecture in England — a building that preserves, in its chapel and long gallery, interiors of extraordinary quality from the reign of Henry VIII. The house was built by William Sandys, Lord Chamberlain to Henry VIII, who entertained the king here on several occasions, and it was later owned by the Chute family, who added the classical portico in the 1650s — one of the earliest classical porticoes on an English country house. The house's collection of Tudor and Stuart furniture, tapestries, and paintings is one of the finest in the National Trust's care.
- Jane Austen spent the first 25 years of her life in Hampshire, and the county is woven throughout her novels with a precision and affection that reflects her deep knowledge of its landscape, society, and manners. Austen was born in Steventon, a village a few miles from Basingstoke, where her father was the rector, and she grew up attending the assemblies and balls at the Basingstoke Town Hall that provided the social world she later depicted in her fiction. The Basingstoke area is the setting for several of her novels, and the Willis Museum in the town centre holds a collection of Austen memorabilia that connects the modern town to its most famous literary resident.
