About Reading
- Reading Festival, held on the Richfield Avenue site every August Bank Holiday weekend, is one of the oldest and most important rock music festivals in Britain — an event that has been held continuously since 1971 and that has hosted some of the most significant performances in the history of rock music. The festival, which runs simultaneously with the Leeds Festival, attracts over 90,000 people and has been the venue for landmark performances by Nirvana, Radiohead, The Strokes, and many others. Reading's association with rock music is one of the most important aspects of its cultural identity, and the festival has shaped the town's character and economy for over fifty years.
- Reading Abbey, founded by Henry I in 1121 as a Cluniac monastery and as his own burial place, was one of the wealthiest and most powerful monasteries in medieval England — a house that received the patronage of successive English kings and that was the site of the marriage of Henry I's daughter Empress Matilda. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and the buildings were systematically demolished, but the ruins that survive in Forbury Gardens — including the chapter house and the inner gatehouse — give some sense of the scale of the original complex. Reading Gaol, built on the site of the abbey's outer precinct, is famous as the place where Oscar Wilde was imprisoned from 1895 to 1897 and where he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
