About Chippenham
- Lacock Abbey, a few miles from Chippenham, is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain — a medieval nunnery converted into a country house after the Dissolution, and the home of William Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of the photographic negative. Fox Talbot made his first successful photographic images at Lacock in 1835, using a process he called photogenic drawing, and the oriel window of the south gallery at Lacock is the subject of the oldest surviving photographic negative in the world. The National Trust manages the abbey and the Fox Talbot Museum, which tells the story of the invention of photography and its impact on the world.
- Bowood House, the country house a few miles from Chippenham that is the home of the Marquess of Lansdowne, is famous for its gardens — designed by Capability Brown in the 1760s and extended by Humphry Repton in the early 19th century — and for its connection with Joseph Priestley, the scientist who discovered oxygen. Priestley worked as a librarian and companion to the first Marquess of Lansdowne at Bowood from 1773 to 1780, and it was in the laboratory at Bowood that he isolated oxygen in 1774 — one of the most important discoveries in the history of chemistry.
