About Trowbridge
- Trowbridge was one of the most important centres of the West of England cloth trade from the medieval period to the early 20th century — a town whose prosperity was built on the production of fine woollen cloth, particularly the superfine broadcloth that was exported across Europe and to the Americas. The cloth industry, which employed thousands of workers in the town and the surrounding villages, was driven by the fast-flowing streams of the Wiltshire Avon, which powered the fulling mills that finished the cloth, and by the skill of the weavers and dyers who had practised their craft in the town for generations. The Trowbridge Museum tells the story of this vanished industry.
- Stourhead, the landscape garden created by the banker Henry Hoare II between 1741 and 1780 on the Wiltshire-Somerset border a few miles from Trowbridge, is one of the most celebrated gardens in the world — a designed landscape of extraordinary beauty that uses a series of lakes, temples, and plantings to create a sequence of views inspired by the paintings of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. The garden, which is managed by the National Trust, is particularly famous for its autumn colour, when the beeches and maples that surround the lakes turn gold and copper in a display that draws visitors from across the country. The Pantheon, the Temple of Apollo, and the grotto are among the most beautiful garden buildings in Britain.
