About Cirencester
- Cirencester was the second largest city in Roman Britain — Corinium Dobunnorum, the administrative capital of the Dobunni tribe and the meeting point of five Roman roads, including the Fosse Way and Ermin Street. The city, which covered an area of over 100 hectares, was one of the most important centres of Roman culture and administration in Britain, and the Corinium Museum holds one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects in the country. The amphitheatre, which could hold up to 8,000 spectators, is one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain, and its earthworks are still visible on the edge of the town.
- Cirencester Park, the 3,000-acre estate that surrounds the town on its western side, was created in the early 18th century by the first Earl Bathurst, who was a friend of Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, and other leading figures of the Augustan literary world. Pope visited Cirencester frequently and helped to design the park's woodland rides and garden buildings, and the park is one of the finest examples of early 18th-century landscape design in Britain. The park is also famous for its polo ground, which hosts some of the most important polo matches in Britain, and for the Cirencester Park Polo Club, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious polo clubs in the country.
