About Cockenzie
- Cockenzie Power Station, which dominated the village skyline from its opening in 1967 until its closure in 2013, was one of the most recognisable industrial landmarks in Scotland. Its two 150-metre cooling towers were visible from much of East Lothian and Edinburgh, and their demolition in 2015 marked the end of an era for the local community. The site is now being redeveloped.
- Cockenzie Harbour, which dates from the seventeenth century, was one of the most important fishing harbours on the Firth of Forth and at its peak supported a large fleet of herring boats. The harbour was also used for the export of coal from the East Lothian coalfield, and its stone piers and quays are among the oldest surviving harbour structures on the Forth.
- The village of Cockenzie is closely associated with the Cadell family, who were prominent merchants and industrialists in East Lothian from the seventeenth century onwards. The Cadells were involved in the coal trade, the salt industry, and the development of the harbour, and their legacy is reflected in several of the village's historic buildings.
